Unless you or someone close to you has had mesothelioma you have probably never heard of this insidious disease. Although mesothelioma is considered to be a relatively rare type of cancer, the popular press has made it a bit more well known because of its link to asbestos.
But exactly what is malignant mesothelioma or mesothelioma cancer? And what are its symptoms?
Mesothelioma is a deadly type of cancer of the lining of the chest cavity and lung. The lining itself is called the mesothelium. In addition, this cancer can attack the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdomen.
In virtually every instance mesothelioma was caused as a consequence of a person being exposed to asbestos.
These kinds of cancer are very slow forming diseases. It often takes anywhere from twenty to fifty years to develop mesothelioma after a person has been exposed to asbestos.
What Are The Symptoms of Mesothelioma Cancer?
Malignant mesothelioma of the lung and chest cavity have the following symptoms:
• Coughing
• A shortness of breath
• Pains in the chest
• Loss of weight
Mesothelioma cancer of the abdomen have the following symptoms:
• Loss of weight
• Abdominal pain
• Abdominal swelling
There are a number of other diseases that are also associated with asbestos exposure. These include pleural effusion, asbestosis, lung cancer, and pleural plaques and thickening.
Where Could You Have Been Exposed To Asbestos?
Before 1975 a lot of asbestos was used in many different industries. The primary places that you may have been exposed to asbestos would have been if you worked at a job in an asbestos mine or asbestos milling plant, in a shipyard, in the construction industry, in the heating and fireproofing business, in the auto repair industry, as a pipefitter or a boilermaker, or in the insulation industry.
If you were not employed in any of these industries - or in another company that used asbestos - then you might have been exposed to asbestos if another person in your household had a job that involved working with asbestos. That's because many asbestos workers carried the asbestos particles and fibers back home with them on their clothing, in their hair, and on their bodies.
Consequently, you could have been the unknowing victim of second hand exposure to asbestos.
In addition, people who lived close to asbestos mines were also indirectly exposed to asbestos and many of them came down with asbestos related diseases.
Even though most of the people who came down with an asbestos related disease often were exposed to asbestos over a prolonged period, it is possible for somebody to develop malignant mesothelioma or one of the other asbestos related diseases from being briefly exposed to asbestos.
In addition, if people smoked and were exposed to asbestos then the probability of their being attacked by one of these life-threatening diseases was multiplied.
